The connection club is where people go to connect, meet more people and make new friends. This club is for everyone who feels alone and unwelcome. Most people who go there are Brazilian. Many Brazilians who arrived at Plymouth South High School felt alone because they didn’t know anyone and there was no one who spoke their language. To solve this problem Mrs. Dias created the connection club.
This club is perfect for people who want to strengthen their existing friendships and connect with others doing the same thing. The connection club is a place for students to connect and learn with each other, learn about different backgrounds and celebrate diversity.
Foreign Language Mrs. Dias said that she started the club to make students feel more at home.
“I started the club To make Portuguese speakers feel comfortable at PSHS knowing that the students could connect with an adult that could speak and understand where the students came from.”
Mrs. Dias also exposes Brazilian culture to American students by bringing in American students into the club to connect and understand Brazilian culture as well as the Brazilians understanding the American culture. Brazilian students therefore connect with students outside of their own culture. Mrs. Dias is bridging the two cultures.
I personally believe the main part of the clubs is to make every student feel included and valued here, no matter where they come from. Other students who go to the club also said somethings similar.
Julia for example said “I like the community the club creates, The atmosphere is safe and comforting. It has helped me feel less alone and more welcome.”
When I asked Pedro, another student, why the club is important he said “the importance of the club is the communication and new opportunities of friendship, it’s a place to relax.”
You’re always welcome to try the club for yourself. See Mrs. Dias if you would like to have more information.
